I want to be very clear about what happened with the Tea app, because calling it a "hack" gives the company too much credit. This was a failure so big, so absurdly basic, that it amounts to one of the most staggering betrayals of user trust I’ve ever seen.

The whole point of Tea was safety. Their own privacy policy stated that the selfies and IDs used for verification would be "deleted immediately."

Women handed over their most sensitive identity documents believing that promise. They believed they were paying with their data for a promise of security.

That promise was a lie.

All of it, the licenses, the selfies, the private photos, was stored in what’s called a public storage bucket. Think of it as a folder on the internet with no password, no lock, no protection at all. Anyone who found the link could just walk in and take everything.

And they did. The original thread on 4chan where the leak was first exposed is still online: https://boards.4chan.org//pol/thread/511317913/. (NSFW)

The fallout was immediate and horrifying. Within 24 hours, the data was weaponized. Malicious actors took the home addresses directly from the driver's licenses and plotted them on a custom searchable Google Map.

The tool of safety became a doxxing directory.

Websites sprung up where users could rate the stolen selfies. (https://web.archive.org/web/20250727062436/https://spill.info.gf/) The promise of a safe space was twisted into a public spectacle of humiliation, and a direct pipeline to identity theft, doxxing, and real-world physical danger.

Only after the damage was done did Tea release a statement. Suddenly, the data that was supposed to be "deleted immediately" was part of an "archived data system" stored to "meet law enforcement standards."

The numbers are sickening. 13,000 selfies and photo IDs. 59,000 other images from posts and messages. And as if that wasn’t enough, a second, separate database was found exposed with 1.1 million private messages. Conversations about cheating partners, pregnancies, and other deeply personal topics, all laid bare.

This is beyond negligence. It’s a fundamental violation of the contract between an app and its users. Tea built its entire brand on the idea of a secure space, and then failed to implement the most elementary security measures while being dishonest in its own privacy policy.

It is not a single hack, but a quilt of old breaches, infostealer logs, and one misconfigured cloud bucket, all sewn together into a tidy, searchable archive of roughly 16 billion credentials. The numbers are big, yes, but the secrets are the same tired ones we've been losing track of for years.

A Quiet Morning on The Porch

I noticed it over coffee. The headline said two passwords for every human were loose in the wild. I clicked past the noise and landed on Cybernews, the same folks who flagged the massive “Mother of All Breaches” (MOAB) earlier this year. They traced this new pile to 30-plus sources, mostly infostealers like RedLine and Raccoon.

Leaks like this feel dramatic on paper, yet they land with a thud in the industry. The fix is not another urgent headline. It is quieter: deploying the right tools and building security habits so robust they become muscle memory. It starts with a single decision to stop managing keys in your head or on spreadsheets and move to a secure, centralized system.

I emptied my mug, watched the steam fade, and felt confident knowing our keys—and our clients' keys—are managed properly.

Looking back, the invitation was probably as cold as the response. I was doing the very thing that frustrates me, creating the problem myself by just expecting people to feel special and attend from a broadcast.

And then, nothing. No replies.

My first thought? "I know people are seeing this, why is it so acceptable to ignore things we want to say no to?"

There were no big excuses from anyone, no follow up. I just had to move on. But if I'm being honest, the feeling is still there because the rejection was never reconciled. I was just left feeling disconnected from my friends.

It makes me think of Father's Day recently. It’s easy to blast out a "Happy Father's Day!" text to every dad you know. It checks a box. But do you do that for the three close dads you actually see the most? Or do you choose to call them?

Texts and emails are great, but they have become a scapegoat for the effort required for real human connection. I am for sure guilty of this. I’ve watched our society’s emotional depth get blunted because we blunted our “connection effort” with each other. Imagine getting a letter to your wife during the Civil War. The effort required to get pen and parchment, to learn to read and write (or find someone who could), then to find a messenger to hand-deliver it. Communication used to carry HUGE intention. Now? It’s like flies. It’s everywhere, all the time, and we often just swat it away because we are overwhelmed with our own chaotic nuclear survival.

So what do we do to fix it, right? The answer isn't a simple, “tech is bad.” It’s more nuanced. I’m going to challenge you to answer these questions yourself:

1. What does "connection effort" look like today? If a Civil War letter was the peak of effort, then, what is the modern equivalent? It could be writing a letter, but what small action carries uncommon weight today? Phone calls? Leaving work to visit a friend in need? A quick pop-in?

2. Who is the 'one person'? Instead of thinking about "everyone," who is one person you've been meaning to connect with? What would be the most intentional way to do it? What's the smallest possible step you could take to move that connection from a "fly to be swatted" to something meaningful?

3. How do you choose your effort? We can't give that Civil War letter-level of effort to everyone. How do we decide who gets our best energy? Does it mean letting go of the pressure to keep up with hundreds of people to truly show up for a handful?

4. What is the opposite of a 'mass text'? If my cookout invite was the "problem," what would the "answer" look like in practice for the next cookout? Is it a personal phone call? A voice note? A knock on a door? A sincere invitation where you communicate you miss someone?

5. How do you build a defense against the 'flies'? If communication is overwhelming, what's one practical boundary you could set to create space for the communication that matters? (e.g., Turning off notifications for an hour, choosing one time a day to answer non-urgent texts, etc.)

I believe we're in a painful phase of our evolution because we haven't hit rock bottom yet. We're on the same timeline as the society in the sci-fi movie Surrogates (2009). In the movie, everyone lived through flawless avatars, terrified of showing their real, messy selves. They traded authentic connection for perfect safety and ended up with neither. We are seeing the same symptoms: the curated lives, the fear of real interaction, the loss of intimacy.

But I don't believe that's our ending. The need to connect over a fire, to see a real face, to hear a real voice is a core human driver that can't be coded away. The answer isn't to reject technology, but to master it, to build and use it in a way that brings us closer, not pushes us apart.

The modern campfire looks like intentional phone calls and unexpected pop-ins, ditching the chaos of life to focus on connecting. It’s making plans with one or two people frequently, versus five different “mass events” where no one feels special for being invited. It’s the conscious, present awareness of making the choice to stay connected.

Take it from an "elder millennial" who existed before the screens. Before email, before Instagram, even before AOL.

Cut through the noise. Connect. Call and visit the people you care about.

The other night, I was up late. One of those nights where sleep isn’t coming and the blue light from the phone feels like company. I was scrolling, not really looking for anything, when I came across this video.

A fella named Alex Hormozi, who is much sharper and louder than I am, was rattling off a list of business rules. He said them fast, like he was firing them from a nail gun. A lot of it was that boilerplate stuff you see online, but a few of them stuck with me. They felt less like new-age hustle and more like old-fashioned sense.

It got me thinking about my work. About keeping the lights on at this MSP.

Promise late, Deliver early.

I thought about this one for a while. It sounds like a trick, but it’s not. It’s about honesty. When a client’s server goes down, the panic is real. It’s tempting to promise a fix in an hour to make them feel better. But things happen. A part is missing, shipping delays, etc.

It’s better to look them in the eye and say, "This is tricky. Let me have until tomorrow morning." And then you work half the night to get it done by 10 p.m. Showing up hours ahead of schedule feels like a gift. Promising the world and showing up late feels like a lie.

Learn fast, Trust slow.

This one hits close to home. In my line of work, you have to learn a new piece of software or a new threat every week. So you get good at learning. But trusting is different. You want to believe the best in people, in a new hire or a new vendor. You want to give them the keys right away.

But trust isn't built in a day. It’s built in the small hours, by watching someone do what they said they would do, over and over. It’s a slow process, like water wearing down a stone.

Give first, Ask last.

I’ve always believed in this, even if I didn't have the words for it. Someone calls with a small problem, a printer not connecting or a password that won’t work. The easiest thing in the world is to just help them. To spend five minutes on the phone and solve it.

You don't send a bill for five minutes of your time. You just give the help. The relationship that comes from that is worth more than any small invoice. The asking, if it ever comes, comes much later, and it feels natural by then.

Ignore opinions, Treasure facts.

When a system crashes, opinions are loud. "I think it’s a virus," "My cousin said it's probably the power supply." The panic creates a lot of noise.

But the facts are quiet. They’re in the system logs, in the error codes, in the blinking lights on a router. The facts tell you the real story. My job isn’t to listen to the loudest opinion. It's to find the quiet fact and fix it.

I guess I just think these rules aren't really about business at all. Not in the way we think of it, with spreadsheets and profit margins.

They're about character.

They’re about showing up, telling the truth, and doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. The work is just the work. The rest is just being a person someone can count on.

Unlike Veterans Day, which honors all who have served, Memorial Day is about those who never made it home. It is reserved for the men and women who died in service to the country. Often young. Often far from home. Always leaving behind families, friends, and futures that were never fully lived.
